Today is Small Business Saturday, an great time to get away from the big boxes and bigger online retailers and shop local. Central Arkansas is loaded with local businesses making great products, and taking the day to buy local is a great way to support these places. And since I’m all about local food, I thought I’d put together a few shopping ideas for the foodie on your list (even if that foodie is you).
There are plenty of local businesses putting out fantastic foodstuffs that will satisfy the pickiest sweet teeth. Head to the Green Corner Store and pick up some Loblolly Creamery ice cream. Stop at Izard Chocolate in Hillcrest for some of the best chocolate and truffles I’ve ever eaten. Live in Saline County? Get to Arkansas Fresh Cafe and buy a box or two of Cocoa Rouge, a truly wonderful lineup of assorted chocolates that will make you forget all about those candies that come in a yellow box.
For the kitchen
Eggshells Kitchen Company is just a treasure, filled with a comprehensive menu of cooking tools and appliances. As someone who used to work in a kitchen supply store myself, trust me when I say you’ll be happy with the selection. Bonus: Eggshells is offering 25 percent on any one item in the store today.
If it’s local food products you are looking for, there are several locations that keep a good stock on hand. Hillcrest Artisan Meats, Terry’s Finer Foods, Mylo Coffee Co., even the Hillcrest Farmers Market (yep, it’s open today) have a ton of products made right here in Arkansas. And if you’re looking for something a bit more specialized, try Fermentables in North Little Rock or The Water Buffalo on Rodney Parham. Both have everything you need if you’re buying for a home brewer, winemaker or cheesemaker, including specific items and full starter kits.
Quench your thirst
Little Rock has a number of liquor stores that provide excellent service and a wide variety of products to choose from. O’Looney’s in West Little Rock today has some good discounts on wine by the case, as well as craft beer and 1.75L bottles of select spirits. Colonial Wine and Spirits has put together several holiday gift baskets for the home bartender on your list. Or you can stop by Rock Town Distillery and pick up some world-class whiskey and other spirits distilled in Little Rock.
Beer drinkers in Little Rock are enjoying a nice boom in the industry right now, and there are a few good ways to take advantage of that. You can fill up a growler to enjoy this weekend at Stone’s Throw Brewing or Vino’s Brewpub. Or you can get some cans or bottles from Lost 40 Brewing, Blue Canoe Brewing Company or Diamond Bear in North Little Rock. You can’t go wrong with Little Rock’s beer choices.
Yeah, we’re all going to buy at least one
cop-out helpful gift card for somebody on our list this year. And fortunately, most Central Arkansas restaurants can help you out with this one. South on Main, Local Lime, The Fold, David’s Burgers … really, I could keep going on and on with great gift card options. If you’ve eaten at a local restaurant you thought was awesome, why not give that experience as a gift to your loved one?
Yeah, it’s raining and miserable today, but #SmallBizSat is still important. These local businesses that are a part of our community need our support to keep going. Even if you don’t get out today, please consider shopping local when buying for that special person on your holiday list. Even if that special person is just yourself.
